NYOI perform in Waterford, Cork and Dublin this month
Following a week of intense rehearsals under professional mentors and Principal Conductor of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, Alan Buribayev, the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland will hit the road for three unmissable concerts.
The programme will open with Rimsky Korsakov’s Prelude and The Battle at Kerzhentz from The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh. This will be followed by a performance by sisters and NYOI Alumni, Jean and Fiona Kelly who join us as soloists in Mozart’s flute & harp concerto. Also on the programme is Shostakovich Symphony No. 10 and excitement is already starting to build among the ranks of NYOI as the orchestra can’t wait to get their teeth into this epic symphony.
I had a chance to speak with new general manager Carol-Ann McKenna in recent weeks for The Arts Show on KCLR96FM (the orchestra have been performing and rehearsing in Kilkenny of late) and the performances for the summer proms sound like they’re going to be great nights for classical music lovers. You can find that full interview here.
Performing with the orchestra will be Irish flautist, Fiona Kelly. Hailed by the New York Times as a player with “impressive technique and elegant musicianship”, Fiona recently completed her Master’s degree at The Juilliard School, New York, studying with Robert Langevin. Fiona won first prize in The Juilliard School Flute Competition and performed Bernstein’s ‘Halil’ with The Juilliard Orchestra conducted by Jeffrey Milarsky at The Peter Jay Sharp Theatre, Lincoln Center.
